What is Dichroic Glass?

Dichroic glass is one of the most fascinating mediums being used by artisans today. It is a remarkable material developed by the aerospace industry, but discovered by warm glass artists like ourselves. Multiple micro-thin layers of different metals (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminum, zirconium, magnesium, silicon) are applied to the surface of the glass, and then kiln fired at extreme temperatures in a vacuum. When the glass comes out and cools down, each metal has made its own brilliant and shimmery color.

How are pieces of jewelry and other art items made from dichroic glass?

During the creative process, the dichroic glass is cut by hand (by us) into shapes and pieces that we then stack and layer for fusing with other glass in multiple kiln firings. We joyously mix and combine colors and patterns to form pendants, earrings, rings, bracelets, and other pieces of jewelry that are special and unique – absolute one of a kind originals that cannot be recreated. Certain wavelengths of light will either pass through or be reflected, causing the array of color that you see in this spectacular jewelry. Pieces change color before your eyes with every turn. The brilliance and depth of color in our pieces cannot be conveyed in photos on a website. Because Dichroic Glass refracts light it is very difficult to photograph. We use natural light or backlight when photographing each piece of this spectacular jewelry - no flashes are used.

Our pieces are heated and cooled very slowly in the kiln with every firing, a process called annealing. Although they are glass and will break, they rarely do under normal circumstances. If yours does break (for any reason – your fault or not) simply return the pieces to us and we will study the colors and patterns and replace it with another as similar as possible.
